Tell Junipurr It’s Friday!

Ahh, Friday! What a welcomed arrival. The leaves on our trees have turned a beautiful golden red, and we are looking forward to sitting by the window with some Mexican hot chocolate and good books. What fun do you have in store this weekend, friend? To start the festivities, voilà this week’s cat-related gems from around the www + cat parent forum.

  • (Above) Books, plants, a record player, and cat - Is Chicago-based artist Esther Kim a kindred spirit or what? :) Her art is simultaneously vibrant, evocative (“sometimes of 90s teen nostalgia”), and wise. P.s. Her illustration for May is Mental Health Awareness Month gave me all the feels

  • I love me a creative adoption campaign, and the shelter staff of Flagler Humane Society launched one of the best I’ve seen this year: they channeled Macklemore (remember the line about granddad’s clothes?) by dressing up their elderly cats and dogs in fabulous senior citizen style. The world needs more feline and canine Iris Apfels! (via BoredPanda)

Community Discussion Prompt: Adopting During Covid

I’ve seen numerous articles this year that Covid has led to a spike in pet adoptions, and indeed I know several dear friends who’ve joined the pet parent league (Viviana of this week’s Cat Parent Interview is one! Read her adoption story of Mr. Whiskers, a four year old tripod tomcat, here). These joyful stories and statistics make an animal lover’s heart glow. Yet, not every community has seen the same positive trends (e.g. economic hardship has led some families to surrender their furbabies), and even in communities where this positive trend is true, the work of minimizing animal homelessness and suffering is far from done. I found this pandemic intake and adoption report from the Richmond SPCA succinct yet illuminating. So, I’d love to hear from you, friend: Did you adopt a new furbaby (or more) during the pandemic? If so, any surprises, funny stories, or “works in progress” you are willing to share? Alternatively, if you work or volunteer with a shelter, what have you seen? Do tell!

p.s. If you are new (welcome!) or it’s been a minute, please check out the Community Discussion Guidelines :)
