Foster Friday 3: The Most Precious Moments

The countdown to Butch & Cassidy’s graduation from foster care is booming in my ear like a grandfather clock, but I’m reminding myself to be present and savor this precious time with them. After all, each minute is an adventure with these two kittens, and with 2,400 minutes left, there are still 2,400 adventures to be had!

Alas, the most precious moments are often unwitnessed. And almost certainly un-photographed. Such as when Butch and Cassidy shimmy like kangaroo babies to tuck in close as the three of you sprawl on a fleece blanket on the floor. Or when Butch asks to be your little spoon and purrs so loudly when you oblige that he drowns out the AC. Or when Cassidy gingerly licks your face and you wonder — who needs La Mer when you’ve got this kind of glam squad?

Oh trust me, I try to capture all these moments and even have cameras in different corners of the kitten room. But inevitably, no matter how quietly and slowly I move, the babies will abruptly stop what they were doing and look at me with an expression that says: “Why you being weird, foster mama?”

So. Allow me to paint you a picture of the most precious moments with words:

  • Cassidy laying in your arms, gazing up into your soul with those knowing turquoise eyes, and ever so gently cupping your face with her two front paws

  • The babies, who are in the stage of development in which play fighting is their day job, pausing mid-grapple to groom each other and give each other little kisses

  • Butch smelling your post-workout feet with his superior feline nose (with its 200 million odor sensors and 14x higher sensitivity than that of humans) and maintaining a UN Diplomat worthy expression of neutrality and non-judgment

  • When you open the door to the kitten room every morning and there is a little orange-and-white cloud named Butch trotting to greet you, purring and chirping

  • The babies waiting in line politely to take turns drinking water … even though the bowl is wide enough for two

  • Cassidy trying to sneak kisses … directly on your lips. Not going to lie. It’s kinda weird but also wildly sweet.

  • Butch flopping over while grooming his generous belly and looking like a horizontal penguin

  • Cassidy pretending to be “looking for something” on your lap and then, since she’s there already, popping down for a long snuggle

  • When Butch had a nightmare and cried out loud and Cassidy ran towards him, purring then draping herself over him and licking his face

  • When you sing Butch a lullaby as he’s falling asleep, he’ll hum along by purring

  • The way that both babies are exceedingly polite and REFUSE to eat the last bite. They will taking turns lick around and around it, till what was one morsel of food becomes 1/16 of a bite

  • How much both babies are offended by a photo of mustard greens (I was reading a recipe book)

  • When the babies are cuddling hard and one sneezes, and the other put an understanding arm around the sneezer

  • When the babies nap like synchronized swimmers!

If you are interested in adopting these two precious souls, please email me at junipurr.studio@gmail.com and I will send you info of the shelter that will be managing their adoption.
