TJIF | Hygge for cats

Tell Junipurr It’s Friday!

Hi there, friend! How are you feeling this November? If you are in the US, what’s helping you cope with the election? If you are elsewhere, can we move in with you?! I jest :) Wherever you are, Junipurr is sending you air kisses - she’s quite the kisser, especially when the sun is in her eye. Speaking of sun on a wintery day, let’s talk about hygge for cats!

Hygge, in case you aren’t in the know (where you been, fren?), is a “Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality,” and it’s especially associated with cold weather (Wiki). A few textbook definitions of hygge: handing out hot chocolate to neighbors and strangers when it’s snowing outside, snuggling indoors with a book and good cuppa, any and all baked goods! To fuel the cozy-making, voilà this week’s cat-related gems from around the www + cat parent forum.

  • (Above) It doesn’t get more hygge than lounging by the heater, does it? The swag and knowing with which this cat does his thing … *bows down*

  • If winter coziness conjures for you the image of board game nights with friends, we are kindred spirits! Though we are still in a pandemic and many of our friends in Europe are heading back into lockdown, some games can be played with just two. Take the beautifully illustrated The Cat in the Sack ("Die Katze im Sack”) from Swiss artist Alice Kolb, for example.

  • The energy of this Vancouver vet as he shares how his beloved cat Mr. Pirate came to be his #1 squeeze reminds me of Mr. Rogers, a veritable role model conviviality *heart*

  • This Pokémon-inspired heated cat bed is in our “The Ooh Laa” list of catification + hygge-fication. Who do you think is Junipurr’s spirit Pokémon?

  • This Vietnamese artist & cat mama’s cozy autumn night routine is so swoon-worthy! Also, how beautiful is that lil orange-&-white cat?

P.s. If you are looking for a deliciously fun and light-hearted book to curl up with, we are sharing our favorite coffee table books on cats next week!

Community Discussion Prompt: Hygge for Cats

In case you couldn’t tell, we are big fans of hygge. After all, Mel grew up in Sweden (another hygge hotspot!), and Junipurr is a cat (aka professional cozy-seeker). We kinda practice hygge all year long. When the weather starts dipping, though, we get serious about the snuggly blankets and sundial-optimized napping spots. What are your favorite seasonal rituals for cozy-making? If you live somewhere eternally warm like Hawaii or Ghana, how do you create a sense of seasonality? We’d love to hear from you!

p.s. If you are new (welcome!) or it’s been a minute, please check out the Community Discussion Guidelines & chime in!
